The many regions of Spain

We have been in Spain 12 days now and I continue to be surprised how different the Camino is from France. In France the trail is not only the way to Santiago, it is also a hiking trail used by many for one or two day hikes or country walks. It has multiple functions. In Spain, it is really the path to Santiago. With the exception of the trails through the forests on the way down the Pyrennées, it is not a hiking trail. So it goes through kilometre after kilometre of fields and along highways and through several large towns and cities; Pamplona, Najéra, Burgos, Léon, Pontfredda. It has one purpose as the way to Santiago.

A few days ago we went through a region calle La Rioja. It is an agricultural region with fields of vineyards, barley, oats, wheat, potatoes, peas and beets. It is large production farming. We walked through a large valley almost three days, with large mountain chains on each side far away. It was impressive. However, it can get a bit tiresome since the scenery is almost always the same!

We then changed to a region called Castilla. We climbed a small mountain up a wonderful hiking trail. Unfortunately the fog prevented us from seeing the wonderful panorama that was described on a panel. Weather is still an issue here. Where is sunny Spain!?

Today we are in Burgos. It is a city of almost 170,000 people. We visited the cathedral this afternoon. I have never seen so much gold leaf, silver and statues! There are some pictures on Flickr that Arlette took. I think my mouth stayed open all the way through my visit!

Unknown a dit...

Where is sunny Spain, you ask ? Well, the rain in Spain, stays mainly in the plain, you know...

Courage et bonne route !
