Burgos: A city for pedestrians
We had some time yesterday and this morning to visit Burgos. It is very much a city for pedestrians with large sidewalks, many malls without vehicules and broad walkways along the river lined with trees. Last evening when we went out between 7 and 8 p.m. there were people walking with children, couples walking arm in arm, all wearing warm clothing. We went into a Tapas bar at about 8 p.m. and before we knew it, it was filled with people coming in for a drink and some tapas before going home for supper.
I went out this morning at about 7 a.m. to find breakfast. The only people around were pilgrimages and city workers. There was no traffic and no people going to work! The Spanish finish their day late with supper around 9 p.m. and start later than we do with morning rush hour just starting at 8 a.m.
I expect that most Spanish cities are designed in a similar fashion. Family and outings before supper seem to be an important part of their culture. There are some beautiful structures in this city. You can a few more pictures on Flickr.
