León - City for people

We arrived in León on Sunday June 14th partly by walking and partly by train. Since our plane tickets back are now fixed, we will be back in Canada July 3rd, we have to ensure that we will have made it to our destination by July 1.

León like many Spanish cities is a city for pedestrians and Sunday was the day to be there! We first visited the Cathedral that was like many Spanish churches quite beautiful. As much as the cathedral in Burgos was full of gold and silver, the León cathedral is all stained glass. it is unfortunate that we could not take interior pictures. It is quite beautiful, windows with stain glass in brilliant primary colours all around!

We also had a drink on the "calle Ancha" which is the main drag so to speak in the pedestrian area. On Sunday evening between 6:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. it is a parade of families walking all dressed in their Sunday best out to see people and to be seen of course! Families with babies, Older couples arm in arm, Families with older children all arm in arm! It is quite a sight to see.
Now about that drink we had on the "calle Ancha". There were several older women who had in front of them a golden drink with a slice of orange and a cherry in it, in a fluted glass. It looked interesting so I suggest to Arlette that she order that for us. Those of you who know Arlette, know that she likes an "apéritif" before supper of an alcoholic nature. The "drink" turned out to be apple juice! It is the last time she will take my suggestion I think.

Though I have found the Spanish countryside less than inspirational, I have to admit that I very much enjoy their cities. Today we are in Astroga and again, there is a large section that is pedestrian and as we sat and watched, even on a week day, families were out strolling and enjoying the warm weather that has finally arrived!
